Start Early
We recommend starting as early in the morning as possible. This way you avoid part of the midday heat and can experience the climb in a more relaxed way.
What you should know before climbing the Lion Rock.
BEFORE YOUR TRIP
The ascent leads through the ancient gardens, past the famous frescoes and through the Lion Gate up to the ruins on the summit.
A little preparation makes the visit more enjoyable – especially in the heat and during the climb.
We recommend starting as early in the morning as possible. This way you avoid part of the midday heat and can experience the climb in a more relaxed way.
The climb can be strenuous. Take enough water with you and drink regularly, especially on warm days.
Choose shoes in which you can walk safely and comfortably. A firm grip is particularly pleasant on the stairs and uneven sections.
Light, comfortable clothing is ideal. For the climb, clothing in which you can move freely can be more comfortable than very long or loose garments.
A hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses can be very helpful during the ascent. Some sections are strongly exposed to the sun.
Sigiriya is not a place to simply tick off. Plan time for the gardens, the historical areas, and the view from the summit.
The actual experience begins right at the foot of the rock. Take your time for the gardens and the historical remains – and enjoy the way up.
We plan your route so that Sigiriya is not just another itinerary item, but part of a relaxed and personal Sri Lanka journey.
